FAQ
What are the differences between perfume, eau de parfum, eau de toilette and eau de cologne?
The differences between the different types of fragrance depends on the amount or the concentration of the perfume oils.
Most perfumes are complex combinations of natural materials such as essential oils from plants and synthetic products that increase the lasting power and heighten the smell.
Alcohol is used as a liquid base for perfume, and the ratio of alcohol to scented perfume concentrates determines what the final concoction is labelled. Alcohol also makes the fragrance emanate from your skin. Without alcohol, you would be the only person who knew you were wearing any fragrance at all.
Perfume: also called extract or extrait perfume typically includes 15-40% perfume concentrates. It is therefore the strongest fragrance available and being the strongest, lasts the longest, and one obviously has to use less of the product. Depending on skin type one could expect the fragrance to last up to 6 hours. Due to these facts, this is also the most expensive. Eau de parfum: typically contains 7-15% perfume concentrates, therefore less expensive and is the most popular form of perfume. Still providing a long-lasting fragrance and lasting 3 - 5 hours. Eau de toilette: contains around 1-6% perfume concentrates. This makes for a light scent that doesn't linger as long as the more intense versions, but most suited for everyday use. Comparatively less expensive than Eau de Parfum lasting 2-4 hours. Eau de cologne (eau fraiche): Sometimes referred to as simply Cologne is the weakest form ofa11 fragrances with 3-5% concentration and lasting up to 2 hours. Eau de toilette : This is the strongest fragrance for men and therefore lasts the longest. Typically lasting up to 5 hours. Available in splash on or spray. Aftershave: Not as strong as EDT typically lasting 2-3 hours. More suited for those with sensitive skin, mostly available in splash on. Splash or spray: There is no difference in the fragrance, only in its application which is a matter of personal preference. However, a spray bottle, being ostensibly sealed, may have a longer shelf life.
Why do some fragrances seem to last much longer than others?
Fair skin has a tendency towards dry skin, and people with dry skin tend to find that their fragrance doesn't last as long as those with oily skins. The reason being that fragrances are basically oils that will be absorbed by the skin like moisturizers, and oily skin has more natural moisture to hold in the fragrance. PH levels (the amount of acidity in our skin) also varies from person to person. Our individual levels of PH will determine how each ingredient in a fragrance will react. Body chemistry, diet and age affect fragrances on their skin. Also fragrance consists of many essential oils. Certain essential oils have affinity to our skin, and they may be absorbed while others may not.
Where should I store my fragrance?
Perfume and Cologne should always be kept in a cool place away from heat and light. Heat will cause evaporation, and light may effect colour change. To help retain the fragrance once opened, store the bottle in its original box. Please remember that a fine perfume is like a fine wine. Once opened, it should be used And like wines, some are more delicate and responsive to time and conditions than others. Perfume is more stable than Cologne as cologne has more alcohol. And the fuller the bottle (the less air), and less evaporation or chance of evaporation.
My perfume does not last as long as it used to what's wrong?
Perfume and cologne contain alcohol as the necessary releasing agent. Without alcohol, the fragrance of many ingredients would never be fully realized. But, when exposed to air, alcohol evaporates. When a fragrance is opened, it will be affected eventually although it will be a very slow and unnoticed rate (unless subjected to heat), the alcohol will evaporate, leaving a more concentrated fragrance. Naturally, when a new bottle is purchased, it will not be as strong as the old bottle. The nose is a delicate instrument. When it becomes used to a scent (whether it be fine perfume or garlic), it does not register the scent anymore and one thinks that it has lost its scent. If you have worn one fragrance a lot, often you will lose your sense of smell to it. The best way to test it is to ask someone who is not used to your scent to see if they can smell it on you
